Kelly is finding out quickly the NFL is very different than college

ChipAP

We?ve yet to adopt the whole ?different is better? mindset when it comes to the arrival of coach Chip Kelly to the NFL. ?To assume that Kelly?s unconventional methods instantly will be successful at a level of pro football where he has zero experience is to subtly disregard the work, the ideas, and the accomplishments of the men who have climbed to the top of the profession doing things in a more traditional way.

Regardless, Kelly has an approach that could end up being successful in its own way. ?But he?s learning quickly that the men he?s working with are very different, too.

College coaches have far more control over their locker room and their program. ?College players have no union (although they need one), and it?s extremely difficult for a player who wants to go play somewhere else to leave if the coach doesn?t agree. ?Likewise, the media coverage and scrutiny at the college level is a lot less intense and probing.

While Kelly can shrug and say ?football is football,? Kelly now has a team full of grown men who will speak their minds both internally and externally on matters about which they feel strongly. ?NFL players don?t fear their coach (especially since many of them make more money than their coach), and NFL players know that they have options ? even if they have contracts.

They also know that the coach of an NFL team isn?t the unofficial emperor of the land where the team is headquartered. ?At some schools, the practical pecking order is: ?(1) coach; (2) university president; and (3) athletic director. ?For every NFL team, the coach answers to the owner. ?In many cities, the coach also answers to the General Manager and possibly to others in the organization, like the team president.

So when it comes to the Riley Cooper situation, Kelly can?t simply address the team once and impose his will on them. ?At Oregon, that may have worked. ?With the Eagles, it won?t.

During a lengthy (but appropriate) grilling from the Philly media on Friday, Kelly acknowledged that this is new territory for him.

?We had issues,? Kelly said of his time at Oregon. ? ?I don?t know. ? Not of this??? I don?t think anything?s been like this, you know what I mean? ?I think because of what he said and in the locker room itself, I think that?s a little bit different.?

It?s a lot different. ?And even though Kelly claims ?there?s never been any question of cutting Riley [Cooper],? it?s obvious that sliding Cooper out of the locker room for now gives the team a chance to assess whether it can proceed without him. ?If the Eagles are satisfied with the performance of the other receivers, the question of cutting Cooper will emerge, even if it truly hasn?t already.

Though the immediate headline from Kelly?s Friday remarks was that Cooper won?t be cut, closer inspection of Kelly?s words shows that he has given himself an out, if Cooper ends up off the team.

?[W]e?re way ahead of ourselves in terms of roster spots,? Kelly said, cutting off an ?if he?s cut? question. ??Again, there hasn?t been one question about a roster spot.? This isn?t a roster spot issue for us right now.?

It isn?t a roster spot issue ?right now.? ?But in four weeks or less, it will be.

Until then and thereafter, it will continue to be an issue unlike anything Kelly ever encountered in college. ?Which makes it necessarily harder for him to import his style and approach to a football league that is far more different for him than his methods are to it.

(AP) ? An American diplomat who police say was speeding crossed the center line in his SUV and rammed into a full mini-bus, killing a father of three whose widow is six months pregnant, officials said Friday.

U.S. Embassy officials in Nairobi rushed the American and his family out of Kenya the next day, leaving the crash victims with no financial assistance to pay for a funeral and for hospital bills for the eight or so others who were seriously injured.

Latifah Naiman Mariki, 38 and whose husband was killed in the crash, was almost evicted from her house this week after her landlord demanded rent. Mariki's deceased husband, Haji Lukindo, was the family's only source of income.

Mariki told The Associated Press that neither the American driver nor anyone at the U.S. Embassy has contacted her, and she doesn't know how she will provide for her soon-to-be-born child and three children, ages 20, 10 and 7.

"It is difficult for me to handle this matter because my kids need to go to school. They need everything, basic needs," Mariki said. "And we have no place to stay because we have to pay the rent. We have no money. ... Even if my kids are sick I have no money to take them to hospital."

Hilary Renner, a State Department spokeswoman in Washington, said the embassy extends its deepest condolences to Mariki's family and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured. She said she couldn't comment on whether the embassy employee would return to Kenya.

"The embassy is fully cooperating with the Kenyan authorities as they investigate the accident and work to aid the victims," she said.

The American driver of the SUV, Joshua Walde, was an information management officer at the Nairobi embassy when he got in the crash on his way home the evening of July 11. He gave a statement to police but because he has diplomatic immunity he was not detained.

A police dossier on the case shown briefly to an Associated Press reporter contained sketches of how police believe the accident happened. The sketch shows the American's SUV turning at a rounded four-way intersection on the edge of Nairobi and driving into the lane of oncoming traffic.

A police officer familiar with the case who insisted he not be identified by name because he is not an official spokesman said of Walde: "He was driving very fast." Pictures in the dossier show that the SUV hit the front corner and side of the mini-bus, smashing in its frame. Kenyan mini-buses, known as matatus, also frequently drive fast and erratically.

A Facebook group of Kenyan mothers took up Mariki's case this week and are trying to raise funds for her. In dozens of comments online, many demanded accountability and expressed dismay that no financial help has been given.

"She's such a decent and honest lady you feel so bad for her. She wasn't employed," Zahra Ashif, who started the Facebook thread, told AP. "The point is that (Walde) is not here so he can't be arrested, but after that point did he not have any courtesy to get in touch? ... For them life has gone on, but what about these kids?"

Walde is an 11-year employee of the State Department who has worked in Kazakhstan, Uruguay and Croatia. Shortly after the crash, Walde updated his work history on the networking site LinkedIn to put his time in Nairobi in the past tense, from July 2012 to July 2013. After the Facebook group noticed the updated resume and pointed to that as evidence that Walde would not return to face charges or help victims, the LinkedIn account was deleted, though a cached version is still available through Google.

Walde's wife circulated an email to sell a family vehicle and try to find new work locations for the family's nanny and gardener after the crash. AP sent an email to Walde's wife on Thursday asking if the family wanted to comment. No response was received.

The U.S. government is concerned about the impact the accident could have on bilateral relations with Kenya, a U.S. government official said. The official noted that embassy employees are typically evacuated for medical evaluations after traumatic events but are also flown out of a country to avoid any possible retribution or attack from others involved in an accident.

The police say the case remains under investigation. The Nairobi traffic police chief, Patrick Lumumba, said he is seeking assistance from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to liaise with the U.S. Embassy. He said authorities didn't detain Walde because "we don't take diplomats into custody."

A police spokeswoman, Ziporah Mboroki, said no charges had been filed against Walde the last time she checked.

"He is a diplomat and has the privileges of a diplomat. If you're a diplomat and you commit any crime in Kenya, the case is investigated and is forwarded to your embassy," she said. "That's what the law says and we work per the law."

A State Department guidance paper for U.S. law enforcement officials on how diplomatic immunity works says that even at the highest levels "diplomatic immunity is not intended to serve as a license for persons to flout the law and purposely avoid liability for their actions. The purpose of these privileges and immunities is not to benefit individuals but to ensure the efficient and effective performance of their official missions on behalf of their governments."

Farzana Jiwa employed Lukindo, the man killed in the crash, as a driver for the last seven years. Jiwa ? who gave money to pay for Lukindo's funeral and to help pay his family's August rent ? is angry that neither Walde nor the U.S. Embassy is helping the victims.

"I'm not asking him to go to jail, but do right by the family, it's so simple. Insurance would have taken care of it," Jiwa said. "They couldn't jail him, they couldn't take his passport from him. All we want is for him to take some responsibility."

Mariki, the widow, lives in a $125-a-month sheet-metal home in one of Nairobi's slums. It has no running water and the tiny and dangerous alleyways turn into a swampy mud pit when it rains. She must pay about $500 a year to send her two school-age children to class but doesn't know how she will afford it. She said she would like to see Walde prosecuted in court.

"What I want is justice to be done," she said.

Democratic governors nervous about health plan

(AP) ? Democratic governors say they are nervous about getting the new federal health care law implemented but add they will be better positioned in next year's elections than many of their Republican counterparts who have resisted the far-reaching and politically polarizing measure.

Several of the 12 Democratic governors shared that sense of nervousness-veiled-by-optimism at the National Governors Association in Milwaukee Saturday.

"There's some angst, and you can see that from the decision the administration made a couple weeks ago," said Delaware Gov. Jack Markell. "There's a lot of work to do."

By next Jan. 1, most people will be required to have insurance. States have to set up exchanges by Oct. 1, when uninsured individuals can start buying subsidized private health coverage that would go into effect Jan 1, and businesses with more than 50 employees working 30 or more hours a week were supposed to offer affordable health care to their workers or risk a series of escalating tax penalties.

But businesses said they needed more time, and on July 2, President Barack Obama's administration abruptly extended the deadline one year ? to Jan. 1, 2015.

That caused some Democrats in Congress to worry the program would not be ready on time, as states are building online platforms for their residents to use to comply with the law. Although the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act in June 2012, the Republican-controlled House has voted 40 times since Obama signed the law in 2010 to repeal, defund or scale it back, most recently Friday.

As Congress prepared to head home for a five-week recess, Obama sought to calm jittery Democrats, assuring them that they are "on the right side of history" despite problems with the law's launch.

Republicans have stated openly they plan to use the slow economic recovery and the health care law to attack Democrats in the 2014 congressional elections.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, the governors' host and a possible 2016 Republican presidential prospect, said Obama delayed the employer mandate out of fear voters would blame Democrats in the 2014 elections if the economy suffered as a result of the new law.

"A cynic would be right to say the reason they pushed back the employer mandate had little to nothing to do with policy and everything to do with politics," Walker said.

Most of the two dozen governors from both parties gathered at the conference expressed confidence that their states would be ready on time, especially Democrats, although they said the work is daunting.

"Any time you go and make this much change in this short a period of time, it does cause headaches," Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper said.

But with that pain comes progress, Hickenlooper and others argued. And those Republicans who have resisted or delayed taking action will pay the price.

Long before election day, the philosophical debate over the bill will have turned into a practical reality for millions of newly insured voters.

"Choosing ideology over jobs and affordable health care is a false choice, and it's an example of the differences between Republicans and Democrats," Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin, a Democrat, said.

Among the challenges states are encountering are the technological requirements to allow buyers to search for insurers, rates and benefits on the exchanges. Others are training state employees to administer the program and marketing it to millions of Americans, all during a time of strained state budgets. Marketing employees were often among the first to lose their jobs.

Despite the headaches, the alternative to the status quo is far worse, Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley said.

"Nothing could be more complicated than doing what we were doing before, which was to throw away more and more money on more expensive care for worse results," said O'Malley, a Democrat also mulling a 2016 White House run.

(AP) ? New Zealand authorities have triggered a global recall of up to 1,000 tons of dairy products across seven countries after dairy giant Fonterra announced tests had turned up a type of bacteria that could cause botulism.

New Zealand's Ministry of Primary Industries said Saturday that the tainted products include infant formula, sports drinks, protein drinks and other beverages. It said countries affected beside New Zealand include China, Australia, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Saudi Arabia.

Fonterra said its customers were urgently checking their supply chains.

One New Zealand company has locked down five batches of infant formula and China is asking importers to immediately recall products.

Fonterra is the world's fourth-largest dairy company, with annual revenues of about $16 billion.

The news comes as a blow to New Zealand's dairy industry, which powers the country's economy. New Zealand exports about 95 percent of its milk.

Consumers in China and elsewhere are willing to pay a big premium for New Zealand infant formula because the country has a clean and healthy reputation. Chinese consumers have a special interest after tainted local milk formula killed six babies in 2008.

The Centers for Disease Control describes botulism as a rare but sometimes fatal paralytic illness caused by a nerve toxin.

Fonterra said it has told eight of its customers of the problem, which dates back more than a year, and they were investigating whether any of the affected product is in their supply chains. Fonterra said those companies will initiate any consumer product recalls.

At a news conference Saturday, Fonterra repeatedly refused to divulge the companies, countries or specific products affected. Gary Romano, the managing director of Fonterra's New Zealand milk products, said his company supplies raw materials to the eight companies and it is up to them to inform their consumers of what products might be tainted.

The company did acknowledge its chief executive, Theo Spierings, planned to fly to China Saturday, in part to deal with the fallout from the botulism scare.

New Zealand's Ministry for Primary Industries said Saturday that New Zealand company Nutricia had used some of the tainted product in its Karicare line of formula for infants aged over 6 months. Nutricia had locked down all five batches of infant formula it believed contained the tainted product, the ministry said. But it advised that parents should buy different Nutricia products or alternative brands until it verified the location of all tainted Nutricia products.

China's product quality watchdog issued a statement urging importers of Fonterra dairy products to immediately start recalling the products.

The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine also told quality agencies around China to step up inspections of milk products from New Zealand.

Romano said the problem was caused by unsterilized pipes at a Waikato factory. He said three batches of whey protein weighing about 42 tons were tainted in May 2012, adding that Fonterra has since cleaned the pipes.

The New Zealand ministry says the tainted product has been mixed with other ingredients to form about 1,000 tons of consumer products worldwide.

The company said in a release it identified a potential quality problem in March when a product tested positive for the bacteria Clostridium. Many strains of the bacteria are harmless, the company said, and product samples were put through intensive testing over the following months. It said that on July 31 it discovered the presence of a strain of the bacteria that can cause botulism.

Romano said Fonterra hasn't received reports of anybody getting sick and added that the problem hasn't affected any fresh milk, yoghurt, cheese or long-lasting heat-treated milk.

New Zealand's Ministry for Primary Industries said it was working with the company to investigate.

Spierings, the chief executive, said in the release that food safety was the company's top priority.

"We are acting quickly," he said. "Our focus is to get information out about potentially affected product as fast as possible so that it can be taken off supermarket shelves and, where it has already been purchased, can be returned."

Earlier this year, Fonterra announced it had discovered trace amounts of the agricultural chemical dicyandiamide in some of its products, prompting a ban on the chemical's use on New Zealand farms.

Rabobank's 2012 Global Dairy Top 20 report ranked Fonterra as the world's fourth-largest dairy company by revenue behind Nestl?, Danone and Lactalis. The company is a cooperative, partially owned by thousands of farmers.

In 2011 the company collected 15.4 billion liters (4.1 billion gallons) of milk in New Zealand, representing about 90 percent of the country's total.

In 2008, six babies in China died and another 300,000 were sickened by infant formula that was tainted with melamine, an industrial chemical added to watered-down milk to fool tests for protein levels. Fonterra at the time owned a minority stake in Sanlu, the now-bankrupt Chinese company at the center of the scandal.
