Microsoft bets on advanced touch tech in tablet war

Microsoft buying Perceptive Pixel last week could easily be dismissed as just another in an endless line of acquisitions by the big movers in tech. But looking a little closer shows that it's part of a trend that may define computing as we know it over the next few years.

One thing that tablet makers have learned over the last few years is that you can't beat the iPad at being the iPad. So Google has focused on being futuristic, Amazon has focused on low cost, and Microsoft has taken two different tacks.

First, Microsoft has visually differentiated itself with the?Metro UI on Windows Phone and Windows 8. An unmistakable visual style is rarely a drawback. It's striking, divisive ...?and even functional.

Second, Microsoft is focused on capability.?That's why the Surface is built to be a full-on Windows PC (though the RT version of Windows is limited to a degree that is hard to calculate), complete with keyboard and trackpad. And it's why Microsoft bought Perceptive Pixel, a company that does creative things with touchable surfaces, making them powerful and intuitive interfaces.

Perceptive Pixel was founded by Jeff Han, one of the people in the world who can rightly be called a pioneer in touch-based interfaces. In a now-famous demonstration done at a TED conference in early 2006, he showed off a multi-touch display with many of the gestures and features that would later be lauded on the iPhone and Microsoft's original Surface table.?

Since then the company has continually advanced touchscreen tech and specialized in oversized implementations like CNN's "Magic Wall." And you'd better believe Han and his engineers are interested in things like Kinect and other new technologies; if they were making multi-touch years before it went mainstream, they've got to have some tricks up their sleeves today.

Perceptive Pixel is a young, innovative company that, with luck, is being treated like an invaluable?treasure by the massive, much-slower-moving company that just bought it. Some young blood and some fresh (and exclusive) new ideas could be the difference between Microsoft's tablets being decent?? and their being essential.

Pen input, fingerprint recognition, 3-D displays, complex gestures. These could all be part of your average tablet in a couple years, but Apple wants to keep things simple and Google is already backing away from full-fledged?PCs. Microsoft isn't the only one focusing on next-generation interfaces (see Google Glass), but it clearly has one foot in the past and one in the future. It's possible that hedging of bets might undo them (it might pay off better to go?all-in on traditional computing, or all-in on next-gen), but it may also be that they hit the sweet spot: iPad convenience married to desktop versatility.

Of course, it'll take time before Perceptive Pixel's young blood makes it through Redmond's?immense circulatory system. And any mishandling (as with Skype, where ads were added to calls) could spoil it. But whether they end up digging their own grave or breaking ground on a New Microsoft, they've got shovel in hand, and that counts for something.

Apple talks about a "post-PC era." Microsoft is trying to?bring the PC into that era anyway. Maybe it'll go nicely, maybe it'll go kicking and screaming. Either way, it should make for an interesting couple of years.

US heat wave eases, but death toll rises

The heat was to blame for at least 66 deaths across the U.S., where hundreds of thousands remain without electricity after severe storms last week. NBC's Michelle Franzen reports.

Updated at 8:36 p.m. ET: The heat that blanketed much of the U.S. began to ease up from unbearable to merely very hot Sunday as temperatures from the Midwest to the East Coast dropped from highs above 100 degrees down to the 90s.

Cooler air swept southward in the eastern half of the country, bringing down some temperatures by 15 or more degrees from Saturday's highs, which topped 100 in cities including Philadelphia, Washington, St. Louis, Indianapolis and Louisville, Ky.

For many areas, the cooler temperatures were ushered in by thunderstorms that knocked out power to thousands. In New Jersey, a line of strong, fast-moving storms knocked out power to nearly 70,000 on Saturday night.

The heat was blamed for at least 74 deaths across the country in the past two weeks, according to NBC News.?A 4-month-old girl died and a 16-month-old girl was hospitalized in suburban Indianapolis after they?were found Saturday trapped in separate cars during 105-degree heat. In Marion County, Ind.,?a?92-year-old man was found dead inside his home that was closed up and not ventilated and a 54-year old man was found dead outside near his residence in extreme heat on Saturday. And in New Jersey, a 48-year-old woman was struck and killed by lightning on Saturday night while walking along a sea wall with friends and family at a Monmouth County beach.

Temperatures in the 90s are a welcome relief after days when the mercury hit triple digits. But with cooler air comes a new threat ? severe storms. The Weather Channel's Kelly Cass reports.

The heat wave has been near-unprecedented for several major cities, according to NBC News. In Chicago, the temperature reached 100 degrees for three consecutive days from Wednesday through Friday, which ties the records of July 3-5, 1911, and Aug. 4-6, 1947. St. Louis' streak of 10 consecutive days of 100 or higher (June 28 through July 7) has only been topped by the Dust Bowl year of 1936 when the streak was 13 days. In Minneapolis, the mercury hit triple-digits on Wednesday and Friday at the Twin Cities International Airport; the last year there were at least two 100-degree high temperatures in the Twin Cities was 1988, when there were four. And Washington hit 100 on Sunday for the fourth consecutive day, tying a record set July 19-22, 1930.

The heat caused highways to buckle in Illinois and Wisconsin, officials said. In Maryland, investigators said heat likely caused rails to kink and led a commuter train to partially derail Friday. No one was injured.

Forecasters warned that a new round of record highs could soon bake Western states.

"It's going to start as soon as tomorrow - really everybody in the Rockies is going to see this heat,'' said Alan Reppert, senior meteorologist for Accuweather.com. He said a high-pressure system developing over the Rockies will cause temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit in Salt Lake City by Wednesday.

Celebrating the warm summer months, as schools let out and the cooling off begins

To stay cool, Americans tried familiar solutions ? dipping into the pool, going to the movies and riding subways just to be in air conditioning.

Even the beach offered no respite. Atlantic City, N.J., home of the famed boardwalk, set a temperature record Saturday of 100 degrees.

Working outdoors in New Jersey on Saturday was Freddie Jackson, a 48-year-old Toms River man who sells roses by the dozen from his car, which was parked in a heavily shaded area off a major highway. Clad in shorts, sandals and a white T-shirt, Jackson said he would stay out as long as he felt safe ? and business was good.

"I do this mainly to make a few extra bucks, so I'm not going to stay if I started feeling (the heat)," he said.

The Weather Channel's Alex Wallace reports.

Jackson said his teenage daughter stopped by to bring him a cooler with several bottles of water, and he had a couple of ham and cheese sandwiches with him.

"I'm tempted to leave them out in the sun for a while and see if I end up with grilled cheese," he joked.

If Americans ventured outside to do anything, they did it early. But even then, the heat was stifling.

"It was baking on the 18th green," said golfer Zeb Rogerson, who teed off at 6 a.m. at an Alexandria, Va., golf course but was sweltering by the end of his round.

In South Bend, Ind., serious kayakers took to the East Race Waterway, a 1,900-foot-long manmade whitewater course near downtown.

"A lot of times I'll roll over just to cool off," said Robert Henry of Carmel, just north of Indianapolis. "The biggest challenge is walking coming back up carrying a kayak three-eighths of a mile in this heat."

In Manhattan, customers who stepped in to see "Jiro Dreams of Sushi" at an IFC movie theater were there for more than entertainment.

"Of course we came to cool off!" said John Villanova, a writer who was on his second sweaty T-shirt of the day and expecting to change again by evening.

He said that earlier, he rode a Manhattan subway back and forth for a half an hour, with no destination in mind "because it really keeps you cool."

Chicago heat doesn't keep these seniors from aerobics

In Chicago, street magician Jeremy Pitt-Payne said he has been working throughout the three-day stretch of triple-digit temperatures, but acknowledged that he might doff the Union Jack leather vest by the end of the day, even though it's part of his British magician character along with the black top hat.

His trick for beating the heat? He starts his shows at 2 p.m., "when the Trump Tower is gracious enough to block out the sun" along his stretch of sidewalk.

Energy harvesting chip captures power from multiple sources

A chip that could combine power harvested from light, heat and vibrations to run monitoring systems such as biomedical devices and environmental sensors has been developed by researchers at MIT.

"Energy harvesting is becoming a reality," said Professor Anantha Chandrakasan, head of MIT's department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. "Low power chips that can collect data and relay it to a central facility are under development, as are systems to harness power from environmental sources. But the new design achieves efficient use of multiple power sources in a single device, a big advantage since many of these sources are intermittent and unpredictable."

Key to the chip's design, according to Chandrakasan, is a sophisticated control system. "Typically, each energy source requires its own control circuit to meet its specific requirements," he explained. "For example, circuits to harvest thermal differences typically produce only 0.02 to 0.15V, while low power photovoltaic cells can generate 0.2 to 0.7V and vibration harvesting systems can produce up to 5V. Coordinating these disparate sources of energy in real time to produce a constant output is a tricky process."

So far, most efforts to harness multiple energy sources have simply switched among them, taking advantage of whichever one is generating the most energy at a given moment, Chandrakasan says, but that can waste the energy being delivered by the other sources. "Instead of that, we extract power from all the sources by switching rapidly between them," he explained. "At one particular instant, energy is extracted from one source by our chip, but the energy from other sources is stored in capacitors and later picked up, so none goes to waste."

Another challenge for the researchers was to minimise the power consumed by the control circuit itself, to leave as much as possible for the actual device it's powering. According to Chandrakasan, the team found a way for the control circuits to optimise the amount of energy extracted from each source. The researchers also integrated an innovative dual path architecture into the system.

"Typically, power sources would be used to charge up a storage device, such as a battery or a supercapacitor, which would then power an actual sensor or other circuit," Chandrakasan noted. "But in this control system, the sensor can either be powered from a storage device or directly from the source, bypassing the storage system altogether. That makes it more efficient. The chip uses a single time shared inductor, a crucial component to support the multiple converters needed in this design, rather than three separate ones."

David Freeman, chief technologist for power supply solutions at Texas Instruments, said: "The work being done at MIT is very important to enabling energy harvesting in various environments. The ability to extract energy from multiple different sources helps maximise the power for more functionality from systems like wireless sensor nodes. With innovations like these that combine multiple sources of energy, these systems can now start to increase functionality."
