LONDON (Reuters) - Jamaican Usain Bolt leaves his rivals trailing on the track and will outsell them off it by combining his unparalleled athletic achievement with personal appeal.
Bolt looks certain to improve on annual earnings of $20 million after retaining his 100 meters Olympic title and the world record on Sunday night. He needs a higher profile in the United States to join the ranks of the very richest athletes but that should not be beyond the fastest man in the world.
The gangly 25-year-old, tall for his sport at 1.96 meters (6ft 5in), is an advertising man's dream. His name is made for his profession and he has won fans on the biggest global stage with a unique cocktail of cheek and cool.
"The fastest man of all time is a big statement to be able to make," said Joel Seymour-Hyde of sports marketing agency Octagon. "Beyond that, you have his stature. He is an iconic-looking figure.
"Then you have the charisma and personality. 100 meter runners are always big on bravado but it's unique to have someone so smiley and relaxed," he said.
Famous for his much-mimicked "Lightning Bolt" pose at the end of races, Bolt has a series of lucrative sponsorship deals.
He is the face of German sportswear company Puma, which also sponsors the Jamaican national team. He also looms large on a poster for Olympic sponsor Visa adorning the Westfield shopping centre on the edge of the Olympic Park.
Bolt's success was a fillip for Puma, number three in sportswear sales behind Nike and Adidas, which said last month it would cut back on sponsorship deals after second quarter earnings slumped.
Puma is not an Olympic sponsor and can only start a fresh marketing campaign built around Bolt next week once the Games are over.
ATLANTIC CROSSING
Puma has tapped into Jamaica's image as a laid-back and vibrant country to help sell Bolt and his team mates, and signed up Cedella Marley, daughter of reggae music great Bob Marley, to design Jamaica's Olympic kit.
Bolt, in return, has helped refresh the image of the Caribbean island, said Peter Walshe of brand specialists Millward Brown.
Walshe said Bolt's calm in the face of immense stress widened his appeal.
"With Bolt, there is something that goes beyond sport. It's his attitude to life, how he conquers pressure with humor, that mixture of humility and arrogance," he said.
He compared Bolt's marketability with former England soccer captain David Beckham, one of the most well-known sports celebrities Britain has produced.
Beckham broke the back of the all-important U.S. market after joining LA Galaxy, and ranks 8th in Forbes' latest survey of top earning sports personalities. Bolt was the highest track and field athlete but only 63rd overall in a list topped by boxer Floyd Mayweather.
"He absolutely has the ability to crack the U.S. market," said Mike Principe, CEO of TLA Worldwide, a company which represents U.S. hurdler Lolo Jones as well as baseball players and golfers.
Track and field does not have the regular exposure enjoyed by the biggest U.S. sports and has to exploit the Olympic spotlight every four years, Principe said.
Puma was certain to step up marketing efforts after London.
"I would make use of his big personality, smile and humor," Principe said.
"Demographically, he is going to appeal quite heavily to the younger American male," he added. "I think you will also find a fair number of women interested in Usain as well."
SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? Yemen's leader has issued a decree stripping the ex-president's son of part of his military command, a measure seen as a step toward reforming the armed forces.
Yemen's army and government both suffer from split loyalties to the new president, Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, and his predecessor, Ali Abdullah Saleh.
Monday's decision by Hadi transfers command of seven brigades of the Republican Guards to his direct oversight or control of regional units.
The Republican Guards, Yemen's best trained forces, are commanded by Ahmed Ali, son of the former president.
Hadi's move is expected to ease Saleh's influence over the military, which he used to challenge the new president.
Since Hadi took office in February, his forces have battled al-Qaida fighters who took over parts of the country's south last year.

Doctors and health systems align their relationships
Physicians are increasingly joining regional referral systems like Borgess Health. A 2012 national physician recruitment survey (Meritt Hawkins, Irving, TX) revealed that more than three-quarters of newly employed doctors were projected to become hospital employees within two years. ?Borgess Health has historically worked closely with many physician groups,? said Patrick Dyson, Executive Vice President, Strategy and Corporate Services. ?These long-term affiliations are often becoming formal partnerships.

Leaky pipes are a common problem for the water industry: according to UK regulator, Ofwat, between 20 and 40 per cent of the UK's total water supply can be lost through damaged pipes. Developing more accurate ways of finding leaks would enable water companies to save revenue and reduce their environmental impact.
The system invented at Sheffield tests pipes by transmitting a pressure wave along them that sends back a signal if it passes any unexpected features, such as a leak or a crack in the pipe's surface.
The pressure wave is generated by a valve fitted to an ordinary water hydrant, which is opened and closed rapidly. The wave sends back a reflection, or a signal, if it encounters any anomalous features in the pipe. The strength of that signal can then be analysed to determine the location and the size of the leak.
Originally created by a team led by Professor Stephen Beck in the University's Department of Mechanical Engineering, the invention was developed into a prototype device in partnership with colleagues in the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering, and UK water company, Yorkshire Water.
The device has now been trialled at Yorkshire Water's field operators training site in Bradford, UK and results show that it offers a reliable and accurate method of leak testing. Leaks in cast iron pipes were located accurately to within one metre, while leaks in plastic pipes were located even more precisely, to within 20cm. The results of the trial are published today (6 August 2012) in a paper entitled, 'On site leak location in a pipe network by cepstrum analysis of pressure transients', in the Journal - American Water Works Association.
Existing leak detection techniques rely on acoustic sensing with microphones commonly used to identify noise generated by pressurised water escaping from the pipe. This method, however, is time consuming and prone to errors: the use of plastic pipes, for example, means that the sound can fall away quickly, making detection very difficult.
In contrast the device invented by the Sheffield team uses a series of calculations based on the size of the pipe, the speed of the pressure wave, and the distance it has to travel. The device can be calibrated to get the most accurate results and all the data is analysed on site, delivering immediate results that can be prioritised for action.
Dr James Shucksmith, in the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering at the University of Sheffield, who led the trial, says: "We are very excited by the results we've achieved so far: we are able to identify the location of leaks much more accurately and rapidly than existing systems are able to, meaning water companies will be able to save both time and money in carrying out repairs.
"The system has delivered some very promising results at Yorkshire Water. We hope now to find an industrial partner to develop the device to the point where it can be manufactured commercially"
Dr Allyson Seth, Networks Analytics Manager at Yorkshire Water comments: "Driving down leakage on our 31,000km network of water pipes is a high priority for us.
"Over the last 12 months alone, we've targeted leakage reduction and as a result we're currently recording our lowest ever levels of leakage.
"But we want to do more, which is why, in addition to the existing technologies we use, we're looking at new ways to help us to reduce leakage.
"Our work with engineers at the University of Sheffield is the latest example of this, and we look forward to working with them going forward to build on what has been achieved so far."
