Samsung Galaxy S III beats iPhone 5 in customer satisfaction study

Samsung Electronics' Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II were the top-rated smartphones in terms of customer satisfaction, beating out Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 5 and other recent iPhones, according to a new report from the American Customer Satisfaction Index.

According to the ASCI, which was founded by the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business, Samsung's flagship smartphone for 2012, the Galaxy S III, received an 84 (on a 0 to 100 scale), as did the Note II, beating the iPhone 5 at 82. Apple's iPhone 4S also scored an 82, and the iPhone 4 scored an 81. The survey was completed in March, before the introduction of Samsung's Galaxy S4, its 2013 flagship model.

Interestingly, while U.S. customers rated Samsung's smartphones the best, consumers in Samsung's home market of South Korean prefer Apple. According to the National Customer Satisfaction Index (NCSI) in South Korea, which uses the same technology and methodology as the ACSI, the iPhone 5 has higher customer satisfaction than Galaxy S III.

The data is notable in light of the ongoing rivalry between Samsung and Apple for smartphone supremacy.

In an interview with?FierceWireless, ACSI Director David VanAmburg said Samsung's newer devices received a big boost in part because of their larger screen sizes. (The S II has a 4.3-inch screen and the S III has a 4.8-inch screen, while the Note II has a 5.5-inch screen.)?The S III received a much higher score than the S II, its predecessor.

"The S III seemed to be a game-changer for Samsung in a way the iPhone 5 wasn't for Apple," VanAmburg said, noting that iPhone 5 has same score, 82, as the iPhone 4S.

VanAmburg agreed that Samsung's marketing likely helped. "We're measuring the customer experience rather than perceptions based on marketing," he said. Yet, "we're likely to perceive what we've been told to perceive over and over again, especially if we don't have comparisons."

Apple has lately been using its ads to tout the overall customer experience on the iPhone, including for?music?and?photography, rather than focusing on specifications. "I think that's an interesting approach for them," VanAmburg said. "It's an attempt, and I think it's smart of them do this, to move away from that flavor-of-the-month phenomenon, more into the iPhone--it's your trusted brand. It's all about that brand affinity."

Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG)?Motorola Mobility Droid Razr Maxx HD scored an 80, and the Droid Razr scored a 77. VanAmburg said the Maxx HD score "shows that Motorola can put out that Android smartphone that is in striking distance of both Samsung and iPhone."

The firm did not have any scores for BlackBerry's (NASDAQ:BBRY) new BB10 phones, the Q10 and Z10.?"We'll be anxious to see what the rankings of the new [BlackBerry 10] devices are," VanAmburg said, who noted the company's previous Curve and Bold?scored 67 and 64, respectively.

ASCI did not rate any Windows Phone devices.

In May the ASCI reported that customer satisfaction with wireless devices such as smartphones improved 2.7 percent in 2013 for a total rating of 76, matching a 10-year high. Apple led the OEM ratings with an 81, but that was down 2 percent from the previous year. Samsung had the biggest gain of 7 percent for a rating of 76. Motorola had a rating of 77, Nokia (NYSE:NOK) had a 76 rating, HTC scored a 72 rating and LG Electronics was down 5 percent with a rating of 71. BlackBerry came in low with a rating of just 69.

Explosions Rock Propane Plant in Central Florida; 7 Injured

Dozens of explosions rocked a propane tank servicing plant in central Florida, northwest of Orlando, late on Monday, injuring seven workers, at least three critically, and prompting the evacuation of nearby homes, authorities said.

No one outside the plant was hurt by the blasts, which began at about 10:30 p.m. local time at the Blue Rhino propane gas filling station in the town of Tavares, about 40 miles (60 km) northwest of Orlando, said John Herrell, a Lake County sheriff's spokesman.

Fifteen workers out of the two dozen on duty were initially reported missing, but all subsequently were found unscathed, Herrell said. Two others were safe from the outset.

"Obviously it was a very, very dangerous scene" when firefighters arrived, Herrell said.

The chain reaction of explosions, ripping through 20-pound propane cylinders one after another ? one tank every few seconds at its peak ? unleashed tall columns of flames into the night sky. Homeowners several miles away reported feeling shocks from the explosions.

"We are hearing the booms here inside the restaurant," said Jessica McClure, 23, a waitress at a Denny's restaurant 7 miles north of the scene in the town of Eustis.

She said a bright orange glow from the fire was visible in the distance as she arrived at work at about 11 p.m.

What caused the explosions was not immediately known, Herrell said.

He said seven workers were injured.

Three men from the Blue Rhino plant were flown by helicopter to the Orlando Regional Medical Center, all of them in critical condition with burns, Sybrina Childress, a spokeswoman for the trauma center told Reuters.

Lake County emergency dispatchers said homes located within a mile of the facility were ordered to evacuate as a precaution.

Aerial views of the facility from footage shot by a local television station about 90 minutes after the first explosions showed a large fire, apparently being fed by continuing explosions, surrounded by smaller blazes.

After another 30 minutes, the main fire appeared to be dying down, and the wreckage of what appeared to be burned-out trucks could be seen.

Speaking by telephone to local NBC affiliate WESH-TV, former plant supervisor Don Ingram said the company took in propane tanks used for home gas grills, cleaned them, checked the valves and refilled them. He said that tanks were stacked on plastic pallets four and five high behind the filling station.

Herrell said an estimated 53,000 propane cylinders were kept on the property.

He said a late crew typically refills 4,000 to 5,000 tanks overnight. The nearest residential neighborhood is located about a quarter-mile from the facility behind a row of trees, Ingram said.

Name Game: BCCI must come under RTI to call cricket team 'India'

If the BCCI refuses to come under the ambit of the RTI then they cannot send the national team under the 'India' tag.

The BCCI will have to come under the ambit of Right to Information Act if it wants to use 'India' as its national team's name, Justice Mukul Mudgal, who headed the committee constituted to draft the Sports Development Bill 2013, said.

Justice Mudgal said that all the sports bodies, including the BCCI, will have to come under the RTI once the Bill is passed by the Parliament.

"RTI will apply to all sports bodies and even cricket will come under it. Apart from a few exemptions like one cannot raise questions regarding why a particular player/coach is selected over another, or the contents of a player's contract, medical health and fitness etc, the public is authorised to raise questions," said Justice Mudgal at a media interaction to discuss the contents of the draft Bill.

The working group also includes eminent sportspersons like Olympic gold medal-winning shooter Abhinav Bindra and former India hockey skipper Viren Rasquinha, sports administrators and legal experts.

"If the BCCI refuses to come under the ambit of the RTI then they cannot send the national team under the tag 'India'," said sports expert Boria Majumdar during the interaction.

Important provisions in the draft Bill include setting up of an Appellate Sports Tribunal and a Sports Election Commission, barring of charge-sheeted persons under the Criminal Procedure Code (section 228) from contesting elections.

The draft Bill also provides for the constitution of an Athletes Commission and NOC/NSFs functioning as a public authority under the RTI and submission of report to the Parliament; setting up of an Ethics Commission which will enforce a Code of Ethics in accordance with the International Olympic Committee's code and principles, enshrined in the Constitution of India.

"The draft Bill talks about setting up of an Athletes Commission with the provision that the athletes be included in the decision making process of executive body. The total strength of the athletes in the executive body shall not be less than 25 per cent of the voting rights," said Bindra.

Mudgal and Boria insisted that with an intention of rooting out corruption from sports, a clause has been included in the draft Bill wherein anybody who has been charge-sheeted will not be able contest in the elections of a NSF.

"Any tainted person will not be allowed to be a part of any NSF," said Boria.

According to the draft Bill, the representation of either gender should not be less than 10 per cent of the membership in the General Body.

All cases where the NOC/NSF are parties will, with the leave of the Supreme Court or the High Court as the case may be, be transferred to the Appellate Sports Tribunal.

An Athletes Commission has been proposed to be set up in each NOC/NSF within six months of promulgation of this Act; the Athletes Commission shall also advise the NOC/NSF on development of the sport, training and competition schedules, athletes grievances, selection and technical criteria, logistics and administration support amongst others.

The draft Bill also incorporates the controversial age and tenure guidelines under which all office bearers of the Indian Olympic Association and the NSFs will retire at the age of 70. A person who has served as an officer bearer on the executive body of a NSF/NOC for two consecutive terms will be ineligible to stand for election.

The Sports Election Commission has been proposed in the Bill to conduct free and fair elections to the National Olympic Committee, National Sport Federations and the Athletes Commission.

"A copy of the draft has been sent to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for its comments, following an agreement between Indian officials and the IOC in their May 15 meeting in Lausanne. After that we would introduce it to the cabinet and I am confident of this bill getting a clearance," said Sports Secretary PK Deb.
