CIOs can drive business innovation, says IBM chief | The African World

The pace of change in the world of IT is phenomenal. Every three months, new trends and technologies emerge that change the way people live and work. Keeping up with ongoing technological revolutions and further applying them to solve business problems has become a daunting task. This according to Hamilton Ratshefola, Sales Director for IBM South Africa.

Technological innovation, followed by application innovation, is what has the capacity to set one business apart from their competitors, allowing them to bring better products to market faster, and meet consumer needs before consumers are aware they have those needs. Innovative thinking also solves complex business problems with solutions that streamline operations and improve efficiencies.

?Ultimately, the ability to innovate will determine who operates most effectively and holds the greatest market share.? says Ratshefola

For every innovation that begins with the question: ?What can we do with this??, there are numerous possible applications. Determining which new solutions can be employed to deliver what business innovations requires supremely innovative thinking. This is where a partnership with professional innovators is called for.

IBM has the world?s biggest ?war chest? of patents and is a veteran innovator of 100 years? standing.

?IBM is in the business of revolutionising technologies for the purpose of problem-solving. Of the 450,000 global staff, more than 150,000 are in research, software development and business consulting to deliver smart solutions to business problems. In addition, in order to remain at the cutting edge of innovation, IBM has constantly reengineered itself for over a century, pioneering strategies and solutions it now passes on to business. ?

?We believe that wherever there is a system of operation in society, government or business, technological innovation has the power to improve it. This is why IBM has long moved beyond its role as a hardware giant. It is now also the world?s third-largest software company and a global consulting powerhouse. IBM?s consultants around the world are delivering advanced solutions to the most complex problems, spanning departments and capabilities, both in the public and private sector, ? adds Ratshefola.

Innovation has a knock-on effect. By innovating in one area, we are able to apply the innovation to multiple other areas.? For example, the chips developed by IBM for gaming consoles. Due to the demands of gaming, these chips are capable of running multiple processes simultaneously, in nanoseconds. Now, they are also in use in banking mainframe computers for fraud detection. Because they are capable of complex processing, they support advanced analysis to detect transaction anomalies instantly, which the actual transaction is taking place. There are numerous commercials applications for them too.

But it is beyond the scope of the average enterprise to track hundreds of thousands of new patents, assess their capabilities, and determine which of them could be applied to solving business challenges. It?s more necessary in today?s economic climate to seek the advice of expert consultants who not only understand the potential for the new technologies, but who actually invented them.

Bizarre crystals reveal underground magma 'highway'

The deadly 1963-1965 eruption of Iraz? contained lava that pushed through the earth's 20-mile thick crust in about a year, reveal crystals from deep below the Earth's surface. Conventional wisdom says magma needs hundreds or thousands of years to make the trip.

By Liz Fuller-Wright,?Correspondent / August 1, 2013

A lake occupies one of the summit craters of Iraz?, one of Costa Rica's most active volcanoes. Iraz? rises to 11260 feet (3432 m) near the capital city of San Jos? and is the country's highest volcano. This crater lake, seen in 1996 from the southern crater rim, has been the source of many historical eruptions.

Not all volcanoes are created equal. Sometimes magma screams upward ? in the kimberlite tubes that bring diamonds to the surface, magma flies upward at over 800 miles per hour ? but that's very unusual, and limited to small volcanoes. Most magma, especially in big volcanoes, is slow and steady ? more tortoise than hare. Right?

Not necessarily, says Philipp Ruprecht, a volcanologist at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in New York. "We like to call it the highway from hell," said his co-author Terry Plank, a geochemist at Lamont-Doherty, in a press release.

In an article published in today's Nature, Drs. Ruprecht and Plank describe fast-moving magmas not just in tiny volcanoes or kimberlite tubes, where it might be expected, but in a huge, long-lived volcano in Costa Rica.

"That's the interesting story, really, that such a fast transport mechanism exists even in these long-lasting, large stratovolcanic systems that are thought to operate on much longer time scales," says Ruprecht.

They examined Iraz?, a massive volcano in Costa Rica. Reaching over 11,000 feet tall and spreading across 200 square miles, Iraz? is the tallest volcano in Costa Rica, and one of the most active. It has erupted two dozen times in the past 300 years, most famously emerging from a 23-year dormant period to shower ash over President John F. Kennedy's visit to Costa Rica in March 1963.

"Typically, magma moves upward, usually by cracking the rocks above it and creating a space for the magma to go into," explains Ruprecht, "taking steady steps toward the magma chamber. In this study, it was a much more rapid ascent."

In other words, sometimes it skips the long trip up the stairs in favor of the express elevator to the penthouse.

This could have important implications for volcano prediction, which is still more art than science. If magma is rising through the crust less than a year before the eruption, that means that tracking the movement could help scientists warn of an imminent eruption.

Unfortunately, the earthquakes caused by magma tend to be very small, only magnitude 1 or 2, and very, very deep ? miles below the surface. The global earthquake system is better at catching big, shallow earthquakes, around magnitude 3 or higher, says Ruprecht. It's a princess-and-the-pea problem: tiny, deep earthquakes can only be felt by very, very sensitive equipment located on the flanks of the volcano itself.

Goldman blinks but no relief for Wall Street's commodity traders

By David Sheppard and Susan Thomas

NEW YORK/LONDON (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs' effort to diffuse intensifying pressure over its commodity business by throwing open its metal warehouse doors likely comes too late to head off further scrutiny of Wall Street's commodity trade.

Two weeks of escalating criticism of banks that own commodity assets and trade raw materials has shaken executives and the industry, with little sign of the pressure relenting. Britain's financial watchdog is considering its own investigation of metals warehouses, sources said, and two lawmakers questioned whether power regulators were tough enough.

Years of growing frustration over long waiting times and rising prices at metals warehouses across the world spilled into Washington this month, with lawmakers questioning why financial banks are so deeply involved in commercial activity and metal users including American brewer MillerCoors calling for a clamp-down.

In its first major effort to appease consumers, Goldman offered on Wednesday to immediately swap aluminum for any end-users holding metal at its Metro International warehouses, allowing them to avoid year-long waits and high premiums. It also refuted the notion that it was causing a shortage of metal, saying none of its customers had yet taken up the offer.

But the effort met with a skeptical response among some traders who said the bank had failed to address the big financial incentives paid by warehouses to attract metal into their facilities, which critics say have stoked prices.

They also took issue with the bank's decision to limit the offer to end-users, excluding the hedge funds and other traders who are believed to account for most of the stockpiled metal.

"It sounds to me like they're offering ice in the winter," said U.S. anti-trust lawyer Robert Bernstein, a partner at New York-based Eaton & Van Winkle LLP, who works on behalf of U.S. copper fabricators.

The move is the latest effort by Wall Street's biggest banks to fend off a barrage of criticism of their role in the raw materials supply chain, where they do everything from stockpiling metal for clients to shipping gasoline to New York.

Last week JPMorgan Chase & Co said it was getting out of the physical commodity business, quitting a sector it paid billions of dollars over five years to build.

But Goldman's Chief Operating Officer Gary Cohn defended the bank's role in commodities and J Aron, its commodities trading arm, calling it a "core" business.

"Commodity hedging is a core competence and one of the most important things we do in the firm and our clients really need us to be in that business," Cohn, who once ran J Aron, said on CNBC. "We are staying in the commodity hedging business."

It is unclear whether the measures will ease pressure from Washington, where a handful of lawmakers are pressing regulators including the Federal Reserve and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to bring banks to account.

DOUBTS

Goldman's move will intensify scrutiny of other merchants and banks, including Glencore Xstrata and JPMorgan Chase & Co that have bought warehouses in the past three years, and also the London Metals Exchange itself, which is in the midst of its third effort to resolve the issue.

The lengthy waits to receive metal shipments are "a systemic problem which goes broader than Metro International," said American Beverage Association spokesman Christopher Gindlesperger.

In London, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is weighing whether to launch a probe of the London Metal Exchange (LME) warehousing system, an about-face from the past few years when the agency said it did not have authority to delve beyond derivative markets into the physical trade.

In practice industrial clients needing metal sometimes have to queue for up to a year while warehouse companies - increasingly owned by banks or trading houses - benefit from rents they charge during the wait or traders focus on using metal in finance deals rather than providing it to clients.

One source at a competing warehousing company was critical of Goldman's offer: "If they had said we're going to deliver out faster, that would be a different story."

WHEN SEPTEMBER COMES

While the commotion over commodities trade has focused most intensely on the warehousing issue, lawmakers are also looking more broadly at whether banks should be allowed in the commercial business of crude oil cargoes and power plants.

While welcoming Goldman's effort as "great news", Democrat CFTC commissioner Bart Chilton said the "the larger issue of banks owning physical commodities, warehousing and delivery mechanisms" remained unresolved.

After two weeks of increasingly frenetic activity and vocal debate, many industry officials expect the din to subside during August, typically a slow month for the markets and also a five-week hiatus for legislators in Washington.

But it may again reach fever pitch in September, with Senator Sherrod Brown expected to call Federal Reserve and bank officials to another hearing of the powerful banking committee.

That month also marks the end of a five-year grace period granted to Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley to comply with commercial banking regulations after they gave up their independence at the height of the financial crisis.

While Goldman has already sold its power plants and trades little physical oil, Morgan Stanley faces an unknown outcome for its massive global oil business, its 49 percent share in oil tanker firm Heidmar and its cherished U.S. logistics and pipelines business TransMontaigne.

Although the banks say they should be allowed to trade and invest in commodity businesses more broadly than their rivals because of an exemption granted to investment banks in a 1999 law, it is unclear how much the Fed will allow.

The Fed announced earlier this month that it was "reviewing" the landmark 2003 decision that first allowed banks to trade physical commodities, a shock decision that raised the specter of even deeper restrictions than banks had been bracing for. It is unclear when that review may conclude.

"The banks went a little bit too far with the Fed's authorization to get into the commercial side of commodities business and I think that the Senate is more than shocked about what they saw when they started investigating into this situation," said Richard Bove, a veteran banking analyst currently working as an equity research analyst for Garden City, New York-based Rafferty Capital Markets LLC.

"I doubt that any bank will have any, if you will, commercial commodities business in 12 to 18 months from now."

OPENING THE DOOR

Separately on Wednesday, two Democratic senators questioned whether a landmark $410 million settlement with JPMorgan earlier this week over alleged power market manipulation had included "adequate refunds to defrauded ratepayers."

The penalty is the second-largest ever by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), but is "equal to roughly 1.3 percent of JPMorgan's 2012 profits", Senators Elizabeth Warren and Edward Markey, both of Massachusetts, wrote to the FERC chairman. They also questioned why JPMorgan executives were not punished.

The crack-down is opening opportunities for less-restricted competitors, particularly foreign banks not overseen by the Fed, potentially leading to the biggest reshuffling of market power since the 1990s era of the "Wall Street refiners."

Brazil's Grupo BTG Pactual SA, the privately held bank run by billionaire Andr? Esteves, is forging ahead with a $300 million-plus expansion plan to create a global powerhouse.

Just months after hiring former Noble Group Chief Executive Ricardo Leiman to lead the drive, BTG has recruited nearly a dozen traders, managers and analysts in London, Geneva and New York to cover everything from freight to grains to natural gas, according to headhunters and a source familiar with the plans.

"From a regulatory perspective they may try to become like Macquarie, a representative of a foreign bank," said Peter Henry, senior consultant at Commodity Search Partners in New York. "There's an angle there."

Samsung Galaxy S III beats iPhone 5 in customer satisfaction study

Samsung Electronics' Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II were the top-rated smartphones in terms of customer satisfaction, beating out Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 5 and other recent iPhones, according to a new report from the American Customer Satisfaction Index.

According to the ASCI, which was founded by the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business, Samsung's flagship smartphone for 2012, the Galaxy S III, received an 84 (on a 0 to 100 scale), as did the Note II, beating the iPhone 5 at 82. Apple's iPhone 4S also scored an 82, and the iPhone 4 scored an 81. The survey was completed in March, before the introduction of Samsung's Galaxy S4, its 2013 flagship model.

Interestingly, while U.S. customers rated Samsung's smartphones the best, consumers in Samsung's home market of South Korean prefer Apple. According to the National Customer Satisfaction Index (NCSI) in South Korea, which uses the same technology and methodology as the ACSI, the iPhone 5 has higher customer satisfaction than Galaxy S III.

The data is notable in light of the ongoing rivalry between Samsung and Apple for smartphone supremacy.

In an interview with?FierceWireless, ACSI Director David VanAmburg said Samsung's newer devices received a big boost in part because of their larger screen sizes. (The S II has a 4.3-inch screen and the S III has a 4.8-inch screen, while the Note II has a 5.5-inch screen.)?The S III received a much higher score than the S II, its predecessor.

"The S III seemed to be a game-changer for Samsung in a way the iPhone 5 wasn't for Apple," VanAmburg said, noting that iPhone 5 has same score, 82, as the iPhone 4S.

VanAmburg agreed that Samsung's marketing likely helped. "We're measuring the customer experience rather than perceptions based on marketing," he said. Yet, "we're likely to perceive what we've been told to perceive over and over again, especially if we don't have comparisons."

Apple has lately been using its ads to tout the overall customer experience on the iPhone, including for?music?and?photography, rather than focusing on specifications. "I think that's an interesting approach for them," VanAmburg said. "It's an attempt, and I think it's smart of them do this, to move away from that flavor-of-the-month phenomenon, more into the iPhone--it's your trusted brand. It's all about that brand affinity."

Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG)?Motorola Mobility Droid Razr Maxx HD scored an 80, and the Droid Razr scored a 77. VanAmburg said the Maxx HD score "shows that Motorola can put out that Android smartphone that is in striking distance of both Samsung and iPhone."

The firm did not have any scores for BlackBerry's (NASDAQ:BBRY) new BB10 phones, the Q10 and Z10.?"We'll be anxious to see what the rankings of the new [BlackBerry 10] devices are," VanAmburg said, who noted the company's previous Curve and Bold?scored 67 and 64, respectively.

ASCI did not rate any Windows Phone devices.

In May the ASCI reported that customer satisfaction with wireless devices such as smartphones improved 2.7 percent in 2013 for a total rating of 76, matching a 10-year high. Apple led the OEM ratings with an 81, but that was down 2 percent from the previous year. Samsung had the biggest gain of 7 percent for a rating of 76. Motorola had a rating of 77, Nokia (NYSE:NOK) had a 76 rating, HTC scored a 72 rating and LG Electronics was down 5 percent with a rating of 71. BlackBerry came in low with a rating of just 69.
