Microsoft Confirms They Won?t Be Making Their Own Windows Phones

winphone8When Microsoft announced their intentions to jump into the hardware space with the unveiling of their new Surface tablet, the next logical question seemed to be whether or not the folks at Redmond would do the same for smartphones. After all, the model seemed to be doing well enough for Apple -- was Microsoft considering adopting a similar approach to help give their Windows Phones a new leg up? Facebook has changed your e-mail address. At least that's how many felt after a quiet but vast change in the way the company displays users' contact information.

In yet another change to its website that irked users, Facebook replaced the e-mail address you picked to display on your profile page when you signed up for the online social network and changed it to an @facebook.com address.

Previously, users may have had a yahoo.com or gmail.com address displayed, so that if other users wanted to contact them outside of Facebook, they could. Sending an e-mail to a Facebook.com address will land the e-mail in the messages section of your Facebook profile. It means keeping Facebook's already-captive audience even more captive.

The e-mail change was first pointed out by bloggers over the weekend and publicized by media outlets Monday, leading to gripes from users, usually on their Facebook pages.

But you can reset your profile if you're bothered by the change. Facebook didn't delete the previously displayed e-mail addresses. To revert back to your original address, click on the "about" section of your profile. Once there, look for "Contact Info" and click on the edit icon on its right hand corner. There, you can change who can see your e-mail address and which e-mail addresses they can see.

Sending an e-mail to a Facebook.com e-mail address allows users to communicate with outside e-mail addresses via Facebook, but it's unclear how popular they have been. Popular as it has been with more than 900 million monthly users, Facebook messages and posts have not replaced e-mail, texting and other forms of communication.

Facebook didn't say why it made the e-mail switch, though it said in April it was "updating addresses on Facebook to make them more consistent across our site."

"Ever since the launch of Timeline, people have had the ability to control what posts they want to show or hide on their own timelines, and today we're extending that to other information they post, starting with the Facebook address," Facebook spokeswoman Jillian Stefanki said in an e-mail late Monday.

Facebook is well known for making changes to its website that have irritated users, sometimes temporarily. Some users are still holding out switching their old profile pages to the Timeline, which lists users' life events, updates and photos in chronological order, dating back to their birth if they shared that information on Facebook. In 2006, there was a big uproar over a now-central feature of Facebook, the news feed that tells people what their friends are doing.

Teams work to clean up Red Deer River oil spill

Stewart Rood has spent much of the past week in an inflatable zodiac boat with a team of University of Lethbridge environmental science researchers scouring the Red Deer River and its swollen tributaries looking for signs of oil.

In the days since a pipeline rupture spilled as much as 480,000 litres of sour crude oil into the important central Alberta river system, teams have been working to clean up the spill, but also to gain insight into how oil spills impact fresh water.

Rood didn?t know what to expect when he arrived at the waterway that supplies drinking water to close to 90,000 people. He had heard the June 8 spill by Plains Midstream described as everything from catastrophic to minor.

?You see very little impact from the spill,? said Rood. ?It?s a fairly small spill on a fairly large river . . . you actually only rarely find small pools of oil.?

The pipeline rupture into the river system cutting through farm and vacation country northwest of Calgary near Sundre coincided with spring rains and early flows from the mountains to the west. The result left what Rood describes as a ?bathtub ring? of oil deposits on shoreline plants.

?Everyone is hopeful the Red Deer River will recover to the point that we will not see any consequence of the spill,? Rood said, noting his team?s research will try to determine effects of oil spills and turn it into a set of guidelines for developing oil pipelines around waterways.

?River crossings are especially prone to pipeline breaks,? he said.

In the aftermath of three pipeline spills in Alberta, environmentalists are calling for a major review of pipeline safety in the province. The Alberta-based environmental group The Pembina Institute contends it?s enough to call the first major review of the integrity of Alberta?s extensive pipeline network in seven years.

About 230,000 litres of heavy crude oil spilled from a pumping station on Enbridge?s Athabasca pipeline near Elk Point in northern Alberta this week. It followed a spill of 800,000 litres of oil from Pace Oil & Gas near Alberta?s boundary with Northwest Territories border in May and as much as 480,000 litres from the Plains pipeline rupture.

Industry figures show at least 3.4 million litres of hydrocarbons have leaked from pipelines in Alberta every year since 2005, though officials say more than 99 per cent of the product in the country?s vast pipeline network is delivered without incident.

?A public review would address growing concerns among Albertans,? said Nathan Lemphers, senior policy analyst at Pembina.

Pipeline safety is an issue for the Alberta government as it looks to support oilsands development in the province and plans by Calgary-based pipeline companies Enbridge, TransCanada and Kinder Morgan Canada to build controversial new export lines to the United States and the B.C. coast.

The already highly political issue gained an even greater level of public awareness this week when an advertising company denied Greenpeace Canada space on one of its billboards in downtown Edmonton.

Alberta Premier Alison Redford has said she?s not opposed to a broader review of pipeline integrity once the investigations into the recent leaks are complete. She also said legislation to overhaul the regulatory system in the province this fall, for implementation next summer, will improve oversight and efficiency.

Officials responding to the rupture on Plains Rangeland South pipeline have said it will likely take months ? and possibly a year ? before the Red Deer River is restored to its previous condition.

?It?s pretty tragic,? said University of Alberta aquatics ecologist David Schindler. ?The Red Deer has been relatively free (from damage).

?It?s a disaster to see it join the rest of the mess we see in the southern part of the province.?

There was a spill of more than 28,000 litres of oil by Pembina Pipelines in the Red Deer River in 2009.

Alberta Environment officials said the waterway will be closely monitored for years to come after the latest spill.

?I have every confidence it will be equal or better than its previous ecological condition,? said Curtis Brock, water-quality specialist with the province, which is overseeing the remediation efforts by Plains Midstream. ?There?s going to be a slight alteration (to the river), but nothing out of the ordinary for what has occurred. It?s going to take a little bit of time.?

Plains said it has consulted with more than 1,675 landowners and residents along the river and Gleniffer Reservoir.

At times, the company has had up to 285 response personnel on-site and used skimmers, booms and absorbent materials to collect oil along the river and at Gleniffer Reservoir. The crews have also collected vegetation, trees and open-water debris.

Treating or removing oil-soaked soil can be a challenge.

?Bulldozing the shoreline is actually pretty devastating to some ecological processes,? said Rood, who had used the Red Deer River as a reference to measure damage on the Bow and Old Man rivers in south Alberta. He said it?s too soon to tell whether there will be long-term impacts to the Red Deer River.

Brock said the cleanup by Plains is going well, but cautioned it is a major endeavour and the company has been careful to use low-impact response strategies so it does not make ?the treatment to be worse than the symptoms.?

After all, it happened so fast that even Paraguay's neighbors are figuring out how to react.

Paraguay, the small South American nation known as an "island surrounded by land," often goes unnoticed outside of South America. But there is an absorbing story behind the impeachment of Fernando Lugo that has turned into a regional crisis that is still unfolding.

The impeachment procedures appear to have been carried out in accordance with the Paraguayan Constitution, but some Latin American presidents are calling it a coup d'etat and refuse to recognize the new president, Federico Franco.

Lugo went from president to disgraced leader in less than 48 hours. In the United States, nearly three months passed in 1998 between the time lawmakers announced they were considering impeaching Bill Clinton and the actual vote. In Lugo's case, it took one day.

Clinton's lawyers spent 30 hours over two days on his defense, not counting witnesses they called. Before the Paraguayan Senate, Lugo's defense team had two hours.

The biggest difference: Clinton survived, Lugo was swept out.

Eight days ago, there was no reason to believe that Lugo would find himself out of a job before his term ended in August 2013. He was an unpopular president among lawmakers, and many had concerns about his credibility as a leader after the former Catholic bishop admitted to having fathered at least two children. In all, four women claim they had babies by Lugo while he was bishop.

There had been calls in the past for his impeachment, but the scandals did not rock his position too much.

That changed on June 15, when police and landless peasants clashed in eastern Paraguay, resulting in 17 deaths.

Peasants fired on police who were trying to evict them from private property, initiating the deadly confrontation, local authorities and state-run media said.

The violence occurred in Curuguaty, a remote community about 240 kilometers (150 miles) northeast of the Paraguayan capital, Asuncion, near the Brazilian border.

In response to the incident, Lugo replaced his national police chief and interior minister. The country's liberal party, which backed Lugo, were incensed to learn that the new minister was from another party.

As the outcry over the deadly clash continued, the liberal party announced on Thursday it was withdrawing its support of Lugo, and an impeachment vote was heard in the lower chamber of congress that day. The vote in favor of impeachment was 76-1.

The next day, Lugo's defense team had two hours to defend Lugo from what it call vague charges of incompetence. The Senate impeached the president in a 39-4 vote.

That was it.

"Paraguayan history (and) its democracy that has been deeply wounded," Lugo said after accepting his fate.

But the swiftness of the action has led to condemnation, or at least criticism from other Latin American countries.

"If indeed it is recognized that the impeachment process happened according to the procedure established in the Paraguayan Constitution, Mexico considers that the process did not offer President Lugo the space and time for a proper defense," Mexico's foreign ministry said.

The presidents of Venezuela, Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador and the Dominican Republic said they will not recognize Franco's administration.

Bolivia "will not recognize a government that does not rise from the ballot box and the will of the people," Bolivian President Evo Morales said.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said, "I have no doubt that President Fernando Lugo was not given a right to his defense, it happened from one day to the next, and the sentence was decided before the trial."

As of Friday night, not a single international leader had called him to congratulate him on his being sworn in as president, Franco told CNN en Espa?ol.

"Of course it worries me. I am aware that I am assuming the presidency in an unfavorable condition," he said.

Franco reiterated that the impeachment happened within the parameters of the constitution, and pointed to the large margins by which Lugo was voted out of office.

"It means that here we have a unanimous position. The Paraguayan people, I think, are satisfied with this decision," he said.

Despite the cold shoulder from neighboring countries, Franco said he will reach out and explain the legality of Lugo's ouster and seeks to have good international relations.

His goal is for Paraguay to be recognized internationally by the time he hands the government over to the next president next year, he said.

"I have the duty and the responsibility to initiate a process that the next government can continue," he said, especially when it comes to important domestic issues such as security and family agriculture.

Most of the countries opposed to Franco's presidency belong to the Union of South American Nations, known as UNASUR. The foreign ministers of that regional body were in Paraguay to study the issue.

The UNASUR ministers "have an attitude of respect for the sovereignty of Paraguay, but also an attitude of respect for democracy," Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff said.

Brazil is one of Paraguay's most important neighbors, and Rousseff declined to give a strong position once way or another over the recent events.

"From this situation I am sure there will be a consequence," is all she said.

The United States also weighed in a more neutral manner.

"We urge all Paraguayans to act peacefully, with calm and responsibility, in the spirit of Paraguay's democratic principles," State Department spokeswoman Darla Jordan said.
