York County wrestlers excel at Florida event

Ryan Narber doesn't know what would've happened if he had been fully healthy going into the District 3-AAA Section V Wrestling Tournament earlier this year.

A first-year starter for the West York Bulldogs this past winter, Narber had an average year on the mat in his freshman season, which ended in the consolation round at sectionals with a loss to Dover's Ross Drawbaugh in a stacked 138-pound weight class.

Still, what if he didn't have to worry about his injured knee? Could he have qualified for districts if he was 100 percent?

"I don't know. It's probably still a mind game," Narber said. "Just thinking about my knee and how I knew it was hurt, I was being cautious."

A rising sophomore, Narber should have plenty more opportunities to qualify for districts in the near future. Last week, he got his first shot to prove himself on the mat since knee surgery last month.

Competing in the Disney Duals, a national AAU team tournament held in Florida from June 28 through July 2, Narber went 8-1 to earn a silver medal in his 145-pound weight class and attain AAU All-America status.

"He has more match-awareness with what's going on here and there," said West York rising senior Kyle Narber, Ryan's older brother. "Down at Disney, even from the end of last season, he looked a lot better."

The Narber brothers were two of 24 wrestlers from York County who competed in the tournament. Zack Clingan, a rising senior for Spring Grove, had the best performance of the bunch, going a perfect 10-0 to earn a gold medal in his 120-pound weight class and attain AAU All-America recognition.

Clingan and the Narbers were teammates on a group made up of 15 West York wrestlers, Clingan and Spring Grove rising senior Mike Hartman (145 pounds) and Dover rising sophomore Brandon Rodriguez (106). That group ended up a few points shy of placing among the top 12 teams in the Community I Division, which was the second-toughest level of competition in the tournament next to the All-Star Division. More than 50 total teams competed in the tournament.

Here's how some other local wrestlers performed:

---Dallastown grad Tanner Druck, who is planning to wrestle at NCAA Division II Seton Hill University next season, and Dallastown rising senior Rodney Sunday competed for "Team Diesel" in the All-Star Division. Druck (152) went .500 and Sunday (126) went 7-4.

---Dallastown rising junior Nick Shields ( 113) competed for "Team Brawlers Elite" and went 5-6 in the All-Star Division.

---Dallastown rising freshman Bryce Shields (120), Eastern York rising sophomore Johnny Vidal (106) and South Western rising sophomore Gage Thomas (145) were teammates on "Team Brawlers Fire."
