Extensive flood damage to New York power grid, subway

As of Tuesday morning, about 600,000 people on Long Island, New York, are without power. The winds from hurricane Sandy peaked at 145 kph (90 mph), knocking down trees, which knocked down utility poles and power lines.

But that's not the main problem. Short-circuiting and overheating caused transformers to explode all over Long Island.

Dick Knadle is an electrical engineering consultant in Dix Hills in central Long Island. "As I was walking around last night," he says, "I could see flashes on the horizon every 60 seconds from the transformers exploding all over Long Island."

On Rockaway Peninsula on the shore of Queens, one such explosion started a fire that burned down more than 80 terrace homes. Thankfully, residents had been evacuated.

Knadle estimates that repairing damage to the electrical infrastructure will take weeks. "The damage to power distribution systems just in my community is vast," he says.

In addition, he says that cellphone base stations in some neighbourhoods will soon be down. Some cellular towers are equipped with backup generators, but others might have a backup battery that will only last for around six hours.

Subway inundated

Then there is the New York City subway. Its pumping system is designed to remove the 50,000 cubic metres of seawater that threaten to enter the tunnels daily because they are situated below sea level. Continuous pumping keeps the tunnels from flooding, but the hurricane's extra dose of water will damage this system. Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) chairman Joseph Lhota calls it the worst disaster in the subway's 108-year history.

The flooding itself is unlikely to cause structural problems, says Nick Buenfeld, a civil engineer at Imperial College London, as tunnels are designed to withstand the weight of the ground above. "If you fill the tunnel with water you are pressing back against the external pressure," he says. "You could argue structurally it is in a better state when it is full of water than when it is empty."

More problematic will be the effect on the electrical systems within the tunnels. "The salt water damages pumping equipment," says Knadle. "The damage will be compounded by the fact that there is no power to operate the pumping equipment right now."

Even with extra pumps, the MTA says it will take up to four days to empty the flooded tunnels. After that, engineers will have to enter the tunnels and repair damaged electrical signals.

Make sure kids are safe ? Peanuts ? It?s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown

Today I have a simple list for Halloween Safety from the CDC ? Center for Disease Control & Prevention.

Expecting trick-or-treaters or party guests?

?

  • Provide healthier treats for trick-or-treaters, such as individual packs of raisins, trail mix, or pretzels. For party guests, offer a variety of fruits, vegetables, and cheeses.
  • Use party games and trick-or-treat time as an opportunity for kids to get their daily dose of 60 minutes of physical activity.
  • Be sure walking areas and stairs are well-lit and free of obstacles that could result in falls.
  • Keep candle-lit jack-o?-lanterns and luminaries away from doorsteps, walkways, landings, and curtains. Place them on sturdy tables, keep them out of the reach of pets and small children, and never leave them unattended.
  • Remind drivers to watch out for trick-or-treaters and to drive safely.

Follow these tips to help make the festivities fun and safe for everyone!

AT&T launches new 4G LTE network locations

AT&T LogoAT&T has announced that it is expanding its 4G LTE network to two new markets today. Folks with LTE devices -- phones, tablets, data sticks -- in Knoxville, Tennessee (and the counties surround the city) and Ft. Myers, Florida should now be able to access the new network. These two new markets bring AT&T's total up to 77 for the nation, covering a large portion of the population.

An interesting bit of information from the press release for the Knoxville rollout indicates that the company spent over $1.3 billion on improvements in its wireless and wireline (home broadband) infrastructure in the area from 2009 to 2011. That gives you a good idea of how much these networks cost to deploy.

We've got a look at both press releases for you after the break.

Mobilicity upgrade to 21Mbps HSPA goes live with throttled service to match

Sometimes the leaks are uncannily accurate. As we'd seen just days ago, Mobilicity has flicked on its 21Mbps HSPA+ network, giving customers of the alternative Canadian carrier up to three times the speed of before if they're using new $80 Huawei E366 modem or a compatible smartphone. Unfortunately, the other part of the rumor is also true: there's now a curb on that unlimited data. Cross the (admittedly high) 6GB mark and those speeds may be throttled without springing for the 20GB that comes with either a $20 Premium Data Add-On for phones or a data-only $50 Premium Mobile Data Internet Plan. Despite the suddenly lowered ceiling, the higher performance is a welcome kick in the cellular pants for those who want a Galaxy S III without turning to one of the big three providers.

How To Take Out Waterlogged Carpet

October 30, 2012 5:22 PM Text Size: A . A . A

Step One: Slice

Using a utility knife, make long, straight cuts either down the room?s long axis or across it. Space the cuts two to three feet apart?you're doing this to cut down the carpet into easily moveable pieces. Wet carpet is heavy, so don't make the strips too wide or they?ll be difficult to carry because they?ll fold in the center.

Step Two: Roll

Take one strip and roll it. The weight of the roll will depend on the type of carpet and how wide the strip is. Crosscut the roll so that you can comfortably lift it, either by yourself or with a second person.

Step Three: Carry

To move a roll, grab one end of the carpet, or stick a hay hook in the center of the roll and lift or drag. The hay hook method is efficient especially if you can work with a second person, each with a hook.

Step Four: Remove the Remainder

Use a framing hammer and flat bar to remove the carpet tack strip, which you?ll find underneath the carpet. You may be tempted to leave it in place, but be aware that it will rust if it?s gotten wet, and debris trapped under and behind it can give off an awful stink. Also remove the carpet underlayment and stuff it into contractor-grade plastic bags.

Step Five: Dispose

Pile the debris outside, but cover it with a tarp so it doesn?t get any wetter. Weigh the tarp down or stake it so it doesn?t blow away.

Why Scott Forstall Is Out - Business Insider

Scott Forstall, the executive at Apple who led development of its mobile software, iOS, is leaving the company.

While Apple just announced the news, there are already multiple reports leaking the real reasons why he's gone.

In short, Forstall's abrasive personality combined with a series of high-profile errors seem to have done him in.

Jessica Lessin at The Wall Street Journal says Forstall's departure from Apple was "not his decision." She also says he was clashing with Apple executives recently.?

Forstall has long been reported to be a divisive figure inside Apple. A year ago Bloomberg BusinessWeek wrote a profile of Forstall, and our main takeaway was: Forstall is a polarizing, political, "a-hole," who has forced out a number of Apple's executives because they hated working with him. He's also a hard-working genius, and a mini-Steve Jobs.

He reportedly had a "fraught" relationship with hardware designer Jony Ive and hardware engineering boss Bob Mansfield. He couldn't be in a room with those guys unless Tim Cook was on hand to mediate. This is probably why it's no coincidence that Mansfield and Ive are getting new responsibilities while Forstall is on his way out.

Forstall was also reportedly the driving force behind the departure of two Apple executives in the middle of last decade: Tony Fadell, who led the iPod group, and Jean-Marie Hullot, who was CTO of the applications group in 2005.

To that end, Ryan Block at Gdgt says Forstall was trying to gather power after Steve Jobs died. If he had pushed out executives in the past, there's a good chance he would do so again. CEO Tim Cook probably wanted to stop that before it started.

Forstall's departure is a stunner because he was referred to as the CEO-in-waiting at Apple last year by Fortune. However, that sort of high profile was not sitting well with people at Apple. Kara Swisher at AllThingsD says he was "exhibiting 'growing open challenges'" to Cook.

Steve Jobs was close with Forstall, says John Gruber. And despite Forstall's abrasive personality, he was protected by Jobs, Gruber speculates. With Jobs gone, Forstall didn't have a powerful defender.

Putting the personality problems aside, Forstall was failing to do his job. And for that alone, it makes sense for him to be ousted.

While he did a brilliant job building iOS on top of the core technologies behind Apple's operating system for Macs, he has overseen two major failures in the last two years. Siri was a big letdown, and Forstall led its development. The launch of Apple's homegrown maps has been an epic debacle. Cook was forced to apologize to customers and Apple is scrambling to clean up the mess.

Fortune's Adam Lashinsky reports?that?"Forstall refused to sign the letter apologizing for the mapping fiasco, sealing his fate at Apple."

Aside from those high-profile screwups, iOS's development has slowed down. While Google and Microsoft are adding new features, iOS seems to be stuck in neutral with only incremental upgrades. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. Why add features just for the sake of it?

However, Lessin at the WSJ says Forstall was emailing Apple employees concerned that "the group wasn't working on enough big ideas in mobile software."

And Robert Scoble, who is plugged into the tech scene heard something similar?though his sources had a different take on it:?"I hear from inside Apple that Scott had no ideas and was begging employees to send him ideas for what to do. He had to go and the signal has been sent that if you are at the top at Apple and have no ideas, you won't survive."

The ?thank you? that changed my life | NCZOnline

There?s so much rampant negativity in the world and on the Internet that it can be hard to deal with some days. It seems like more and more, I?m seeing people being mean and succeeding, and that makes me sad. Perhaps the biggest poster child for this was Steve Jobs, who by all accounts was a really big jerk.[1] In one way or another, he seemed to legitimize being an asshole as a good way to do business. And I?ve seen this even more now that I?m involved in startup life.

A situation recently popped up in my life where I had a decision to make. I could do what ?everyone else does?, tell a lie, and end up with a bunch of money. Or, I could tell the truth, and never see a cent. Perhaps because of some abnormal wiring in my brain, the thought of lying didn?t even register as a realistic choice. I was told, ?but this is how things are done.? I didn?t care. That?s not the way that I do things.

I began searching for examples of where being nice and polite actually worked out in business or otherwise. An opportunity where it would have been easy to be mean but being nice changed the result. After struggling to do research and thinking about stories I?ve heard, I came to realize that the best story is my own.

Back in 2003, I was working in a nondescript job that I hated. I was going on year two of an almost unbearable four years at this job and needed a creative outlet. I had started writing articles for several online sites and had gotten the idea to write a book. I wrote every day for about six months straight trying to figure out what this book would be like and what the focus would be. I knew it would be on JavaScript, more specifically all the stuff people didn?t understand, but I really wasn?t sure of the title or the outline or who I would propose the book to. All I knew was that I wanted to write about JavaScript and so that?s what I did.

After that six months, I had enough material to put together a rough outline and start proposing the book to publishers. My first choice was Sitepoint. I had written several articles for their website and they were just starting to publish books. I thought a book on JavaScript would fit in great with what they were trying to do. So I sent over a proposal with a writing sample and anxiously awaited a response. Not too long later, I got a rejection e-mail. And it wasn?t just a rejection e-mail, the person who wrote the e-mail not only didn?t like my idea for the book, he said he didn?t understand why anybody would ever want such a book and also that my writing style was terrible. This was quite a blow to me and my ego, but keeping with what I had been taught growing up, I wrote back to him and thanked him for the feedback. I asked if he could give me any advice on how to improve the book or my writing style. I heard nothing back.

I next approached Apress. At the time, Apress was just getting started with web development books and I was hopeful that they would be interested in a JavaScript book. My proposal was accepted and somebody started to review it. After a couple of months without hearing anything back, I e-mailed this person only to have the e-mail bounce back. Not a good sign. I dug around on the Apress website and found another editor?s email. I e-mailed him and explained the situation: someone was reviewing my proposal and now it appears that he doesn?t work there anymore. I inquired if anybody was looking at it now, and if not, if it would be possible to assign someone. He apologized for the inconvenience and assigned somebody else to review my proposal.

That someone else was John Franklin, a really nice guy who spent some time looking over my proposal and researching potential. After another couple of months, John finally got back to me and said that Apress was going to pass on the project. They felt that the JavaScript book market was already dominated by O?Reilly and Wrox and they were not interested in going head-to-head with them (particularly ironic given the number of JavaScript titles that were later published by Apress). I was disappointed because I felt like there was room for more JavaScript books in the market and they were missing an opportunity. As this was my second rejection, I was a little bit down. Still, I wrote back to John and said thank you for taking the time to review my proposal and for giving me his honest assessment.

Much to my surprise, John wrote back to me. He said that he personally thought that the book was a good idea and that I might be better off going with a larger publisher that might have the resources to pull it off. He gave me the name and contact information for Jim Minatel, an acquisitions editor at Wrox. I had never thought to contact Wrox because they already had several JavaScript books including the original Professional JavaScript by the late Nigel McFarlane.

I e-mailed Jim and introduced myself. It just so happened that he was looking for somebody to rewrite Professional JavaScript from scratch. Jim and I worked together to merge my proposal into his idea for the book and the end result was Professional JavaScript for Web Developers, my first book, which was released in 2005. What happened over the next several years is something that I still can?t believe.

The first interesting thing occurred when I got an e-mail from Eric Miraglia at Yahoo!. He let me know that Yahoo! was using my book to train their engineers on JavaScript. This was really exciting for me, because I had been a longtime Yahoo! user and knew how big the company was. Eric said to let him know if I?m ever in California, because he?d like to meet and show me around. I thanked Eric and told him I wasn?t planning any California trips soon, but I would definitely keep that in mind.

Because of the success of Professional JavaScript for Web Developers, Jim contacted me soon after to ask if I would write a book on Ajax. The Ajax revolution was just starting and Jim wanted to get out in front of it with a book. I initially turned it down because I was burned out on writing and the schedule he was proposing was really aggressive. However, he was eventually able to convince me to do it and Professional Ajax was released in 2006. It turned out to be the second Ajax book on the market and ended up being one of Amazon?s top 10 computer and technology books of 2006.[2]

The success of Professional Ajax was overwhelming. The book put me on the radar for Google, who came calling asking if I would like to work for them. Google was in a big hiring spree, bringing in top tier web developers from around the world. At the time I was still living in Massachusetts and the thought of moving to California wasn?t one that I relished (Google didn?t have the Cambridge office at that point in time). But I saw this as an opportunity I couldn?t pass up and accepted their invitation to fly out and interview.

At the same time, Jim came ringing again asking to update Professional Ajax for the next year. With all of the excitement, the Ajax book market was exploding as people discovered new and interesting ways to use this new technology.

While I was out in California interviewing with Google, I emailed Eric and asked if he would like to get together for drinks. I met with him and Thomas Sha at Tied House in Mountain View. We talked about the current state of the web and how exciting it was to be a web developer working with JavaScript and Ajax. We also talked a little bit about what was going on at Yahoo! at the time. When I got back to Massachusetts, Thomas called and asked if I would be interested in interviewing at Yahoo! as well. After all, he said, if you?re going to move all the way across the country you might as well know what your options are.

I ended up choosing to work for Yahoo! instead of Google and moved to California. I can?t say enough about my time at Yahoo! and how much I enjoyed it. I met so many great people that I can?t even begin to list. However, there are a few that stick out as I look back.

I met Bill Scott through my cubemate, Adam Platti. I had mentioned to Adam that I wanted to start giving talks and I didn?t know how to go about it. Adam said that his friend Bill did talks all the time and I should chat with him to figure out how to do it. He then made an introduction to Bill, and Bill made an introduction to the organizer of the Rich Web Experience, which was taking place in San Jose. That was my first conference speaking opportunity. The experience made me realize that not only could I give a talk, but people actually liked it. From then on, I was giving talks at conferences and other events.

I met Nate Koechley through Eric and Thomas when I arrived in California. Nate gave an introductory class to all new front-end engineers at Yahoo! that I was in and really enjoyed. Over the years, I would get to see him give several talks, and he more than anyone else influenced my speaking style. I loved how visual his slides were and how we could explain complex topics by breaking them down into small chunks. He also had great interactions with the audience, never getting flustered and always being both personable and respectful. I was fortunate to have Nate in some of my talk rehearsals and was the beneficiary of a lot of great feedback from him.

I met Havi Hoffman through email. At the time, she was working for the Yahoo! Developer Network and was looking for somebody to write a book. Yahoo! was just starting a partnership with O?Reilly to have Yahoo! Press-branded books and someone had written a proposal for a book called, High Performance JavaScript. I still to this day don?t know who wrote the original proposal, but that person was unavailable to write the book and so Havi had contacted me to see if I was interested. Havi introduced me to Mary Treseler at O?Reilly, and we all worked to get the book out in 2010.

High Performance JavaScript was also a hit. The time was right for a book on JavaScript performance, and people really liked it. The success of the book led to more speaking engagements which in turn led to requests for more books. In 2012, I proposed Maintainable JavaScript to Mary as a new title, and it was published later in the year. That was after the third edition of Professional JavaScript for Web Developers was released in January 2012.

The success of my books and speaking engagements led me to leave Yahoo! in 2011 to do two things: start a consulting business and attempt to create a Silicon Valley startup with some former colleagues from Yahoo!. Because people knew who I was, it was fairly easy to get consulting work. That was important because we were bootstrapping the start up (WellFurnished) and we would all be chipping in our own money to get it off the ground.

Today, I have the career that I couldn?t even have dreamed of coming out of college. Being able to work for myself, do the things that I love, and still have time to write and give talks is truly a blessing. And all of it, every single piece, can be traced back to a simple ?thank you? I emailed to John Franklin in 2004. If I hadn?t sent that e-mail, I wouldn?t have been introduced to Jim Minatel, which means I wouldn?t have written Professional JavaScript for Web Developers, which means Yahoo! would never have started using it and I never would have written Professional Ajax, which means I never would have been interviewed by Google, which means I never would have met Eric Miraglia and Thomas She, which means I never would have worked at Yahoo!, which means I never would have met Adam Platti, Bill Scott, Nate Koechley, or Havi Hoffman, which means I never would have started giving talks or writing for O'Reilly, which means I never would have been able to start a consulting business, which means I never would have been able to attempt a startup.

My life was taken on a completely different path just by being nice to somebody. The truth is, you never know when that one moment of being nice will turn into a life altering moment. Amazing things can happen when you don't push people away with negativity. So, embrace every opportunity to be nice, say please when asking for things, and above all, never forget to say "thank you" when someone has helped you.

Raw Talent

Raw Talent

I love art. I have always loved art. I?m good at art. I have always been good at art. Art came easily to me and I found out, at an early age, I had a knack for it. I could draw, paint, weave, sculpt, and design. I had what they call raw talent.

My name is Iron-head Bradley. They call me iron-head because I?m hardheaded, hard to understand, and hard to get along with, at times. But, I can create some of the most beautiful artwork you will ever see ? and do it with ease.

So, when I went online hoping to learn about designing web sites I had ?promoting-my-own-artwork? in the back of my mind. I was going to get it out there. I wanted to show off all this creativity everyone has been ooh-ing and ahh-ing over. I wanted my own online business and I was willing to do what it took.

Ok, so, you already know I am an artsy kind of guy. What you might not know is that I love ALL things art. If it is art related it is Iron-head Bradley related. I can?t get enough of art or of the art world. It is in the blood. You could say I?m artistically inclined.

Though I didn?t have a website of my own, I could find my way around the internet. I had enough savvy to find the information I was looking for and I had a good idea of what would or wouldn?t work for me. I wish I could say I spent days searching hundreds of sites before I found the ideal site but it popped up only after about 15 searches.

I knew it when I saw it. I knew the site I was looking at would teach me everything I needed to know about selling my artwork online. I had seen a lot of web based art sites and really hated the ones that just dealt with 1 area of art ? like just paintings and nothing else.

The broader minded art sites might include drawing or photography with the paintings. The best art web sites, like the ones I like, are real broad. They can tell you all about drawings, paintings, sculpture, popular art events, art news, art classes and a whole slew of other art topics.

The site I found for building my site is really the ideal. It will teach me how to build my website, get good traffic going to it, and even help me to sell a masterpiece or two. And, all this on a website that focuses on art-based and art related things.

Some web sites are just plain better than others.

How to improve high-speed rail ties against freezing, thawing conditions

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? A Kansas State University-led research project is helping high-speed rail systems handle the stress of freezing and thawing weather conditions.

The university's Kyle Riding, assistant professor of civil engineering, is leading a three-year study that looks at the freeze-thaw durability of concrete railroad ties. The research is essential to developing safe and durable high-speed rail systems.

Riding is collaborating with Mohammed Albahttiti, civil engineering doctoral candidate from the United Arab Emirates; the university's Institute of Environmental Research; as well as a colleague at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and commercial partners Canadian National Railroad and CXT Concrete Ties Inc. The Federal Railroad Association recently awarded Riding more than $1.2 million to study the materials and fabrication process, and to develop quality control tests that ensure safe freeze-thaw durable concrete railroad ties.

"Freeze-thaw is a stressor that happens in pretty much all concrete when it is exposed to water and then freezing and thawing temperatures," Riding said.

When water freezes it grows in size by roughly 9 percent, Riding said. These increases, coupled with the decreases when the ice melts, cause stress on the container the ice forms in. When too much stress occurs the container can break -- similar to what happens when a full soda bottle is left in the freezer.

In concrete rail ties water collects and freezes in the pores of the concrete. As the liquid freezes it creates stress in the railroad tie, which can crack the ties. High-speed rail systems are more sensitive to these problems because of the high speed at which the trains travel on the tracks.

As high-speed rail systems become more widely adopted around the world, it becomes essential to keep passengers safe and maintain the rail system infrastructure against freezing and thawing conditions, Riding said.

To study the freeze-thaw conditions in concrete rail ties, researchers will add surfactants to the concrete as it is being mixed in the laboratory. These compounds produce millions of microscopic bubbles in the concrete that act as pressure release valves to help protect the concrete against damage.

One of the challenges will be to ensure that the bubbles are evenly dispersed through the concrete rail ties and small enough to protect the concrete from damage.

Researchers will evaluate the vibration conditions and air voids created by the bubbles in rail ties produced from various other materials, including surrogate clear materials, cement paste and mortars before scaling up to concrete. The ties will also be studied to determine if they get wet enough on the tracks to cause damage.

Additionally, the team is developing evaluation methods that will help railroad tie manufacturers determine the freeze-thaw resistance of concrete rail ties once they are produced.

"This is a good way to take fundamental science and apply it to a real-world application that will affect our transportation infrastructure and our communities," Riding said. "Plus, who doesn't like trains?"
