How To Take Out Waterlogged Carpet

October 30, 2012 5:22 PM Text Size: A . A . A

Step One: Slice

Using a utility knife, make long, straight cuts either down the room?s long axis or across it. Space the cuts two to three feet apart?you're doing this to cut down the carpet into easily moveable pieces. Wet carpet is heavy, so don't make the strips too wide or they?ll be difficult to carry because they?ll fold in the center.

Step Two: Roll

Take one strip and roll it. The weight of the roll will depend on the type of carpet and how wide the strip is. Crosscut the roll so that you can comfortably lift it, either by yourself or with a second person.

Step Three: Carry

To move a roll, grab one end of the carpet, or stick a hay hook in the center of the roll and lift or drag. The hay hook method is efficient especially if you can work with a second person, each with a hook.

Step Four: Remove the Remainder

Use a framing hammer and flat bar to remove the carpet tack strip, which you?ll find underneath the carpet. You may be tempted to leave it in place, but be aware that it will rust if it?s gotten wet, and debris trapped under and behind it can give off an awful stink. Also remove the carpet underlayment and stuff it into contractor-grade plastic bags.

Step Five: Dispose

Pile the debris outside, but cover it with a tarp so it doesn?t get any wetter. Weigh the tarp down or stake it so it doesn?t blow away.
